FAQS
-
What should I expect at my first pelvic floor physical therapy session?

You should expect a thorough assessment to evaluate your symptoms, strength, movement patterns, and of course pelvic floor function. This will often include an internal examination of the pelvic floor musculature for the most comprehensive assessment and root of your symptoms.

-
What will I be discussing with my therapist in my sessions?

Pelvic floor physical therapy often involves very intimate and vulnerable topics such as discussions around urination, bowel movements, and intercourse. You will be in a private space with your therapist and the more information you can provide and describe around these topics, the better you can be helped with your symptoms.

How long are the sessions?

The evaluation and follow-up sessions will be a full hour, one-on-one with a pelvic floor physical therapy specialist.

What kind of exercises will I be doing?

Exercises will be prescribed and tailored specifically for each individual. This could include anything from strengthening exercises to mobility and breathing activities. You will also learn how to modify daily habits and patterns and improve functional movement.

Will there be any hands-on treatment?
Manual therapy techniques are often performed in sessions. This includes internal and external soft tissue massage, visceral mobilizations, and dry needling. These can all be used to decrease pain, improve muscle function, and decrease tension in the body.

What should I expect after sessions?

Often times there can be soreness in your hips, abdomen, and low back muscles from examination, as well as from various treatments and exercises. This could potentially last 24-48 hours after your session.

How long will treatment last?
